Our Outdated Electric Grid is Letting Us Down

Making West Virginia Power Reliable & Affordable

If we don’t upgrade the electrical grid, we’ll see more outages, higher costs, and businesses leaving. That means fewer jobs, weaker communities, and a hit to our way of life.

It’s time to rebuild and keep West Virginia’s power — and economy — moving strong.

American Consumers and Businesses Bear the Burden of Blackouts

According to estimates from the U.S. Department of Energy, power outages cost businesses and consumers hundreds of billions of dollars each year — as much as $150 billion.

For families, that means spoiled food, higher repair costs, and hours lost to outages. For small businesses and manufacturers, downtime can cost thousands of dollars per hour in lost productivity and damaged equipment.

We Can’t Restore America’s Energy Dominance with 50-Year-Old-Wires

President Trump is bringing America back. Manufacturing is returning and electricity demand is growing.

Yet our grid is obsolete and not able to support President Trump’s plans for American energy dominance.

What’s Wrong with Our Grid?

1. America’s Transmission Lines are Overloaded

More than 70% of transmission lines are over 25 years old according to the Department of Energy, and much of the grid is operating beyond its intended design life.

Why the Grid Matters to You

$150 billion – Annual cost of U.S. power outages to businesses

70% – Share of transmission lines more than 25 years old

Thousands – Dollars lost per hour by manufacturers during outages

Upgrading America’s grid means fewer blackouts, lower costs, and a stronger economy.

2. Modern Homes Demand More Power

The electric grid is aging and not able to keep up with our modern power needs. Our transmission system was built decades ago. Power lines that once worked well now bottleneck power and struggle to meet modern demand. It’s like trying to stream 4k video on dial-up Internet.

With modern appliances, the average home’s peak demand is nearly 2-3 times higher than it was 40 years ago.
